Wong Shih Yaw
Biographical Info
WONG SHIH YAW (b.1967) is an established artist in Singapore who has held many solo and group exhibitions over three decades. He was active in the Artists Village in the earlier years, and National Gallery widely collects his works, The Singapore Art Museum, United Overseas Bank, Art Patron Mr Koh Seow Chuan and other private collectors in Singapore and overseas.
His more recent big-scale solo exhibitions were held respectively at Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts Campus1 Galleries 1 & 2 “ALLEGORIES – THE WORKS OF WONG SHIH YAW” Retrospective Exhibition (of works from 1994–2014), and at ArtSpace@Helutrans in 2019 entitled: “BETWEEN THE PARALLELS”.
Shih Yaw’s artworks generally share about his reflections on man’s constant search for life answers, spanning from early highly self-expressionistic style to being inspired by his faith journey. His painting styles are versatile, such as narrative, personification, symbolic, conceptual, expressionistic…etc.
Besides painting, Shih Yaw does candid sketching of people (caught unaware/engrossed in their activities), woodcut/lino printmaking and illustrations, Art-teaching and executes big-scale commissioned painting/mural projects.
