Cristene Chang Hoei
Biographical Info
Cristene Chang Hoei (b. 1942, Singapore) is a mixed media painter and contemporary printmaker who extracts and combines techniques from printmaking and painting to hone her own distinctive voice and expression. Her practice has been profoundly influenced by literary texts and directed by the metaphors of weaving and threads, of time, memory & reconstructions. She has also produced works relating to a sense of place and home – including coastal areas she grew up in or places she is passing through.
Education
Cristene’s interest in the conceptual development of her work was been honed as a Fine Art graduate (Printmaking) from Middlesex University London. Her earlier foundation was at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA), Singapore.
Selected Awards & Commendations
She was conferred the First Prize in the Ray Fawcett Memorial Award, London [1995], and the First Prize (Abstraction) in the Dr. Tan Tsze Chor Award, Singapore in 2003. Her other accolades include Commendation awards in OUB Painting of the Year in 1984 & 1986 and the Philip Morris ASEAN Art Award [2003]. She received the Bronze Award, UOB Painting of the Year 2014. Her work was selected for the 2017 Guanlan Printmaking Biennale and exhibited at the China Print Art Museum; and selected for the Biennale Arte Dolomite 2018, Italy.
Chang’s practice has been featured on television – The Travelling Palette (Mediacorp, 2007) and Passages: Art Nation (Mediacorp, 2002). She was featured as a significant female artist in the book Women Artists in Singapore (Tan B.T., NHB, 2011, Singapore) and her creative techniques in the publication Printmaking Handbook (A&C Black, London, 2008).
